Horned Toad Capital of Texas:

Once home to one of the largest populations of horned toads in Texas, Kenedy was proclaimed by the Texas Legislature as the “Horned Lizard Capital of Texas.” In 1967, the sale or trade of the horned lizard was outlawed and in 1977, the horned lizard was placed on the threatened species list. Despite being highly protected, it is tough to spot one of these critters without knowing where to look. Dr. Wade Phelps is a self-proclaimed horned lizard enthusiast and is also a member of the Horned Toad Club of Kenedy.
